This is easily my favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach. It has a really upscale, romantic environment, but I've also been here for girls nights and family dinners. I love the duck breast the best, but the scallops and risotto are amazing as well. I've also really enjoyed the lamb and the pork loin. The only thing I'm not the biggest fan of is the steak frites. They have a lot of amazing desserts including a trio sampler so you can try a variety. I love the molten chocolate cake, but I'm a huge chocolate addict. They have good wine specials for happy hour, too.

Came with a groupon. I can see why they're offering a groupon deal because their location is less than ideal. It's a nice shopping center, but it's a place you can't see from the road and probably wouldn't notice until you meant to go there. I imagine the groupon is helping to get the word out, which is good because their food is awesome. For appetizers we had fried calamari (perfectly cooked and seasoned) and the hot goat cheese plate with olives, garlic and toast points (well prepared and seasoned very well). Both were finished very rapidly. For dinner we both got burgers. I had the steakhouse (bacon, Gouda, onion straws) and my husband had the cobalt (bacon and bleu cheese). Both cooked perfectly as ordered. Good hand cut fries. Fun presentation on squares of butcher block. Friendly servers, though we were seated near the food pickup window at the kitchen and all of the servers were congregated there for most of our meal talking. It didn't really bother us, but it could bother others I suppose. Drinks were highly priced ($12 cocktails, didn't order, husband had bottled beer for $4.50).

Clean, friendly, romantic ambience. A colleague referred this place to me, and he spoke highly of it. My boyfriend and I came here for lunch, just to try out the menu before coming here for an actual dinner. The lunch prices were reasonable, the service was friendly, the setting was romantic, and the food tastes fresh and amazing! I am definitley coming here for dinner one day, but make sure you make a reservation first!

Came here for a dessert with my girl who speaks highly of this place. Keep in mind this visit was only for dessert and noting else. We sat at the bar, it was not busy on a Monday night. First off the bar has a strange smell coming off of it. Kinda like I was sitting next to a lagoon , something needed to be washed for sure. Not present to take in while you look at the otherwise nice establishment. The creme brûlée sampler was great , shared it with my date who's kinda crazy but I love her. However the tiramisu, was anything but a pick me up it was a put me down! I have never experienced a tiramisu then I had to literally pushed down my spoon to break the lady fingers underneath it's like they weren't even coated and there was hardly any espresso flavor to be had! This dish was on special but it was anything but special it was like a bad dream that I was invited to that was insult to my culture and my people of Sicily! JK JK not that serious but it was fucking horrible. I like sharing my deepest darkest thoughts about food because literally this made me feel deep and dark inside as I ate it because it was not made properly and it should not be on the menu but I still ate the whole thing, because I'm a fat fatty after all. You may think I'm being harsh, but this dish, was pretty much murdered, No tiramisu in my life has ever had HARD lady fingers in it, which means it was pretty much preped right before coming out. This dish, which I have made many times myself, should always be allowed to sit and mix all the flavors together before being served. I will return to this location for an actual dinner, however Im not likely to sit at the Bar or order desserts.

This is a great date place. The atmosphere is very relaxed and neat. There is seating inside and outside that is decorative and romantic. We shared the mushroom fries which were so strange (in a good way). I am very curious to experiment with these at home. He ordered the steak which was tasty enough to not even ask for A1. I ordered the mussels of the appetizer list as my meal. Delicious! The sauce was thick, white, and cheese based. Something I have never personally had. It was more than enough food and I thought it was very good.

I will have to say that this place is legit. The only reason they are getting a 4 is because of the bread and service. The bread was obviously pre-made and thrown in the oven. Our waitress wasn't the best but our meal and appetizers were fantastic. We had the baked flounder with fresh lobster on top. That sat on some fresh mash that was super tasty. The dream sickle was a great drink and reminded me of my childhood orange pop sickles. I will definitely be heading back.

Thursday nights at this place are fantastic; Latin Jazz, great food and wonderful service are just a few of the pluses.

I'm always around the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach and I always wanted to try this place. Thank goodness my friend wanted to eat here for her birthday and I was excited! As you walk in, it has almost what you might call a lounge atmosphere. The bar is right there when you walk in so no need to walk to the opposite end of the establishment to order a drink while you wait for a table. There is a small waiting area and it feels like you are at home. The couches make it have a homey feel to it. We had about 12 or so people in our party and our waitress was delightful. She had the most bubbly personality that you don't see a lot when you go into some restaurants, especially with a big party. She was very helpful and she was very helpful to those that had questions about the menu. I ordered the Mussels for my appetizer and it was tasty. It was in a creamy sauce that was a little too thick for my taste. I still prefer a white wine sauce compared to the one I had here. For my entrée I ordered the New Zealand Lamb. It was cooked to my liking and it was moist and juicy. The white truffle glaze that was on it complemented the lamb well. All in all, it was a great night here and I would come back again and try the other dishes they have. Everyone was friendly and sometimes that might be all you need to have a good impression about a restaurant. Other than the food of course.

LOVE Cobalt Grill!! The Veggie Burgers are amazing!! The salad is always fresh and the mushroom fries are super delicious. One of my favorite places to eat at the beach!!

My initial visit here was from purchasing a Groupon. Ever since then, I've been coming back. I love this place. My favorite is the Tilapia stuffed with crab or veggie burger. The burgers are half off on Tuesdays :) They have other weekly specials. They always ask when I get there if I have reservations, but it's usually not to busy when I come (never came on weekends) don't forget to save room for desserts!!! My favorite is the coconut cake. So delicious. I have to get it everytime! The service can be a hit or miss here, but overall it's not terrible. Highly recommend!

Is it humanly possible to have a better bacon cheeseburger? I think not.... I had to go back for another the very next day before I left town..MY OH MY! SIMPLY DIVINE. But served for lunch so check your timing...we arrived only 30 min before they closed down the lunch menu but our very kind waitress stayed longer to serve us since my companion is a regular...I would be too if I lived less than 2000 miles away!

The food is all pretty good. The atmosphere is different, but nice. I've always lucked out with really attentive servers as well.

Outstanding as always. Had a new waitress and she was great. Charged our card wrong but that was no big deal - she did a wonderful job. I had the filet and shrimp special and my husband had the steak (said ribeye but looked like strip) homemade fries are always a winner...it was delicious!! Big Big fan!!

I pretty much love everything on their menu. Thursdays at 7:30 there is live music in the bar area. Tuesdays is half price burger night. Yummmmmy! Happy hr drink prices are great. They have burgers, lamb, fish, portabella fries, calamari, etc. a small menu but big selection.

4.5 Excellent food and service! The cocktails are great, the scallop appetizer and calamari very enjoyable (though I preferred the scallops) and the tuna entree was sooo good! In my opinion it is the best place to eat in the Hilltop area if you are looking for a place that is a little nicer, I do love No Frille, but I think of that as more of a casual place...I personally enjoy Cobalt much more than Aldo's or even Fire & Vine. Maybe it is not quite as fancy, but the quality of food is awesome and everything is always delicious. My husband loved the beef wellington here, we took my brother-in-law who often visits VB, and he was honestly mad at us that no one had ever taken him to Cobalt before! I believe wednesday and thursday they have burger and bottles of wine for half off, and it can get crowded!

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Virginia Beach. I love the atmosphere. It is a great place for date night. I have never been disappointed with anything I have ordered.

The special was halibut with lump crab meat on top, mashed potatoes and asparagus. It was delicious!! My husbands steak was way over cooked and the fries you could drop oil out of. So this was our first visit and a very mixed review :(

this restaurant is perfect for a date night. The lamb and special filet with mushrooms was fork tender a seasoned well. We ended the night with a wonderful coconut cake.

My first time there I tried the burgers there and it was delicious, I was really satisfied. The way it was plated was really creative, they placed the burger and fries on a wooden board (kinda looks like a wooden cutting board) very innovative. We also ordered the scallop appetizer, it was good, but the portion was small.

  • Joy H.

Wow the shrimp risotto was to die for!! The Rockefeller fish was also superb. Very good service. Lovely ambiance. My sister and her husband spoke highly of this restaurant and they were right. We made reservations to return in a few days. See you then!

Wish I understood the hype. It was my first time there for dinner. Went for burger night but it was SO hot in the dining room that I decided I didn't want anything that heavy. Our waitress acted put off by us the entire time we were there. It made us feel uncomfortable. Food was ok . My salad was warm. We did get a burger for my daughter but it was dry and overcooked. My $12 cocktail didn't was all mixer and no alcohol.

The Trifecta! No question that Cobalt is one of our best. Cobalt boasts an impressive following but somehow this pearl of Hilltop remains inconspicuous to so many. The man behind the screen; behind the success, is executive chef and owner Alvin Williams. Alvin's talent runs deep and he is just incredibly genuine, both in his demeanor and his cooking. Alvin was raised and began his culinary career in England. Luckily for us, he somehow ended up in Hampton Roads far from home. He initially was at Le Chambord, which no one will ever forget as the best of the best. Later, he gave us the earlier years of Bardo and leaving them with a visionary menu which still flaunts many of his original creations. Cobalt became his love child, a restaurant to call his own. Cobalt has become the quintessential restaurant. For those who are feeling a little saucy and wanting a sexier atmosphere, the bar and lounge up front is perfect. It is sleek with a generous list of inventive cocktails, martinis and mojitos. On a warm evening, relax on the patio. As you venture beyond the lounge, your eyes will greet the open kitchen peering over the main dining room. Take a seat and view the wine list, which is tasteful and well-executed. Alvin always has specials and if you're lucky, he will be featuring his beef wellington. But, if not, I have no doubt he will wow you with whatever you choose. I most certainly can vouch for the New Zealand half rack of lamb. These tender lamp pops are succulent and come as a bundle atop sauteed mushrooms and risotto all drizzled in white truffle harmony. This dish delivers. I can't help but eat it slowly to taste every little bite--the truffle is hypnotizing and to sync it with lamb, risotto and mushrooms--perfection. After all of this, I know you might be stuffed to the gills, but no matter what, you have to get dessert. Make room for it! The fried oreos are are a fave --just imagine your favorite cookie, not only melting in your mouth, but covered in funnel cake! My gal pals love the fried oreos along the espresso martini. He also has a killer bread pudding and magnificent dippable doughnuts. Obviously, I'm a fan. Undoubtedly, you will be too. He is open for lunch and dinner except he is closed on Sundays. He does a half price Burger night on Tuesdays and the lunch menu has great pairings at a fairly lunchable price. Enjoy!

Food was good. Ordered burger medium it arrived well done. Service seas so so. My waitress was snotty and made snide comments. Ignored me after a, and I quote her word for word,"ah a big tipper". Large party had come in seated in her station. Waitress said this while serving me! How crass.

I was looking forward to my fist visit since I have heard so many good things about this restaurant . We had the worst waitress I have ever had at a nice restaurant! ( unusual name that started with an A) From the time we were seated till we left it was a bad experience! We were given the specials list for the night before and when we asked if they were the same specials she said she didn't know because she was off? We had to ask for water glass refills and after dinner we had to ask twice for dessert menus then she brought them with a huff. I was charged the wrong price for my dinner... And was shorted $40 after paying my tab! I must say the food was good. Not good enough for a return visit. Not going back!

Don't judge this book by its cover otherwise you'll be disappointed that you didn't try it (it's in a strip mall shopping center). The decor, food and service is quite impressive. Both dinners ordered were cooked perfectly and were tasty. Service is what you'd expect at a nicer restaurant with servers being attentive but not annoying by checking on you every 5 seconds. If our drinks started to get down to a sip or two she would come by and ask if we wanted something else but for the most part she gave us our space which I appreciate. I walked out of there having bought 2 glasses of champagne, 2 cocktails, 2 salads and two entrees for $133.58 which is including the tip. Btw the Parmesan risotto is delicious. Would I go back, definitely.

Decided to pop in for a bite to eat for lunch after doing some clothing shopping and was surprised to be greeted at the door by a guy in a tux! Definitely a little more posh than I was expecting. I had a seat at the bar and decided to go with the risotto; the staff was polite and was open to substituting out the shrimp for scallops. The meal was great; the scallops were cooked properly with good seasoning. The risotto had just the right amount of cheese. I also happened to glance over and notice one of the monster "Wellington Burgers" that someone ordered and it looked fantastic, I'd definitely try one next time I was in. The restaurant has a unique vibe with a separate bar and eating area and a casual seating area off to the side. While I was a little confused by the formality of the maître de, I can appreciate the upscale feel it brings. My only complaint was the service at the bar, with just me at the bar and two bartenders, I would've expected a little more attentiveness. Instead, they both basically hid away in this little side room. I didn't get my glass refilled when it was empty, I wasn't asked if I wanted dessert, and it took 5 minutes after I finished my meal before she came over to give me a check. Plus, in general, sitting at a bar should entail *some* idle chit-chat of some sort. Something they could definitely improve upon. Summary, food is great, service needs a little polish.

Just home from my third visit in last year ... this place doesn't disappoint - the champagne penne with chicken and leek as outstanding and the "dip sum" donuts insane!

I had a drink at the bar while waiting for takeout. The burger was delicious and the mojito drink while waiting was awesome. I would love to go back for sit down service.

This place is absolutely wonderful. I love the ambiance in the restaurant. I got the portobello fries which were tasty and unique and for dinner I got the mussels appetizer and a side of Parmesan risotto. Don't let the Gorgonzola broth scare you for the mussels. It's not a traditional way of making the mussels but they were oh so yummy. Didn't have a single one that was "swampy". The risotto could've been cooked a little longer but was great. Looking forward to going back :)

I will take part of the blame for not calling-in in advance to make a reservation , but we arrived we were told that the dinning room was closed for a private dinner party. the hostess offered us a table on the patio or on a high bar table. There was one table setup in the bar by the wall we thought we'd take, but the hostess told us that five top was reserved and offered the 3 of us a 2 top by the isle. (IMO she lied about the reservation and did not want to lose the 5 top to a couple with a child, no one used it while were there). Our table got bumped into twice before we moved ourselves out of the way when the person on the table next to us left. Service felt rushed but was efficient and the server did take the time to explain the specials. Silverware and napkins were handed to us after the dishes came. Since we were in a loud crowded bar area, we opted to skip appetizers and dessert and simply have main courses. I opted for the Steak Frites, and my wife had the Layered Filet with Parmesan risotto. I found my steak under seasoned, could have used more salt and cracked pepper, the sides were good, peas and fries. My wife's filet was good, not great, with a trio of tasty shrimp and a tiny bit of mushroom. She did not care much for the sauce. The dining room looked really nice and comfortable, but we'll never know as I don't plan to return as the food did not impress me and the overall service made us feel as unwanted guests because of the dinner party, I'd rather try another place next time, Like Yelp says about 3 Stars.. A-OK.

Happy! Happy! Girl's Night Out! Great food, wonderful service and beautiful decor. We started with wine and made a four course meal at this outing. The regulars love to stare and act as if it is a private club that you wondered into without their permission. Their attitudes made us giggle and stay longer. We made a point to wave at everyone who glared at us. When they stared more than a few times we winked at them and pretended to be responding to their attempts to 'flirt.' What fun! We will be back so be on the lookout for happy people smiling when it is clearly not received well. Lighten up people (regulars) join a real private club if you want to pretend your super-special. See you at The Cavalier!

Ahhh... the perfect place to eat on Friday night with friends. Food was really sublime. They had a special for NYE and I couldn't help but, snag my date's delectable dish. I eat at Cobalt Grill about two or three times a year. I am always impressed with the service and the creative menu. Every dish I have had, and I have tried many, has been delicious. Cobalt never gets old. What I cannot wrap my head around is the burn-your-nostrils, putrid smell that hits you when seated in the main dining area, towards the back. We both noticed it, and just decided to deal with it because we didn't want to ruin our experience. This was not a one time event, we noticed it the last two times we are here. Strange...

Tonight we celebrated our sons marriage with his wife, and family! We went online to make reservation in their own APP (how cool)! We were seated right away by the friendly hostess. The ambience was perfection, with a circular table for 6 so we could enjoy dinner conversation. Arden was our personnel Waite staff, her attention to every detail put us in the SoHo, NYC Category. Her knowledge and description of the menu had our palettes salivating for everything ; from the catch of the day, and the filet mignon, too a penne dish. I chose the FM!!! Oh My Gosh. Out of this world to perfection! All of our family was extremely happy, and Arden made it all that more special. The staff, ARDEN, Ex Chef and ambience puts this in a category that is very deceiving for a. "Grille." Chef Papan would be proud !!! Will go back weekly to try everything! Thank you Blue!!!

I'll start off with the food was great. I bought the groupon for it & my boyfriend & I made a reservation, as requested, a few nights ago. I love the decor in the front/bar area. I wasn't really a fan of how close the tables are to one another in the back. I felt like we were sitting with the other guests. We ordered a bottle of wine and the server told us it was 1/2 wine night. Sweet! She asked us if we wanted an appetizer 3 separate times. I hate it when places try to up-sell. We both ordered a dinner entree even though their burgers sound & looked awesome! I had the shrimp & scallop risotto. It was so rich & creamy. Large portions too! My boyfriend ordered the tuna with portabella fries. It was over a delicious sauce. Yummerz. My complaints would be the fruit flies that were hanging around our table and that the atmosphere is a little too stuffy/schmancy for my liking, but that's just personal preference. Also, beware if you have the groupon because I had to end up paying full price for the wine that was 1/2 off. That's never been an issue at other places & alcohol isn't valid for the groupon anyways. Our server informed us that the chef had made that rule. Service was good & I'll give it another shot to try their burgers in the bar next time!

mussels in gorgonzola cream sauce = very good, good size portion. ask for more bread! service is always excellent. my husband wanted a larger portion for the lamb... mainly because he's a dude who loves his meat, and the lamb was really good. parmesan risotto - has always been extremely yummy. pricey... but consistently worth it.

Loved the new Sunday brunch! Eggs Benedict, maple bacon, surprisingly scrumptious biscuits, cheese grits - it was all well done. Not diner fare. Even the sausage was a cut above. I get the feeling I shouldn't have been surprised, but this was my first visit to the restaurant. Live music completed the atmosphere. French toast and French fries were a hit with my kids. I'm stingy with the stars, but not much to improve. I want to go back.

This restaurant is definitely a gem in the Hilltop area in Virginia Beach. I should probably make my way out there more often because this restaurant not only has good food but provides a nice dining experience. Coming in you'll walk into a very sleek and contemporary lounge area with a full bar. Both times I've been here it was for lunch so it is no surprise to me that I haven't seen anyone hanging out in the lounge. Through the lounge you'll take a short walk to where you will find the restaurant. The dining area is small yet spacious with lighting that isn't too bright or too dim making this place perfect for a lunch date. The restaurant, located toward the Ocean Front, has brick walls reminding me of a downtown type area. You will get the feel that the owners of this place take pride in giving you a great experience. On my last trip I had the Cajun Tuna Wrap which I really enjoyed. There was just enough Chipotle ranch sauce to give the wrap an extra kick but not overbearing the Cajun taste. The fries I had with my wrap were okay at best. The other time I was here I had their Hangover burger --- cheddar, bacon and a fried egg...yes a fried egg. You should definitely try this! The fried egg made eating this burger a little messy but overall was an excellent tasting burger that you most likely wouldn't find anywhere else. I'll be back here for two reasons: 1) dinner and 2) seeing what nightlife is like here because the lounge area definitely has a cool look. My guess is that this place draws a nice crowd for drinks right after the work day ends.

We had a great dinner here! The food and service were on point! I had the tuna. It was perfectly cooked. My husband had the flounder, which was also wonderful. We split the oyster appetizer, which was great, but could've used another breadstick or two.

Third time here, and another great experience. My wife and I were celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary and this place was definitely worthy. My wife had the flounder, catch of the day. I had a 12 ounce steak which melt in your mouth. We both had a glass of wine. For dessert we had the chocolate cake with ice cream. They had live music, and our server Jasmine was amazing. I would deathly recommend that you go here.

Great place! The enviorment is warming, you feel very comfortable when your seated. the food was very good. Cooked perfectly. One of our favorite eats in the area! I should mention they have wonderful service!! We were there at closing one night having a very late dinner and they went as far as to make fresh coffee for us with our deserts. Id reccomend this place for a nice date!

My boss and I had a business lunch here and I have to say it was one of the best lunches I have had. Service was great and everyone was friendly. The menu was wonderful, I wanted to try everything. I had the ravioli pasta which was amazing, a great portion for the price and every bite was delicious. The staff was on top of everything, even when I spilt my water everywhere. They were great and I would recommend anyone to try it out. Can't wait to go back!

This place is nicely put together. Outside seating if desired, comfortable lounge /bar area with high top tables as you enter, and an open dining area in back with the tables a bit too close to one another for my liking. Decent atmosphere and decor, but the lighting was a bit dim and I had a hard time reading the menu. Good thing I had my phone to light the way! I wasnt overly impressed with our server. She took a while to get to us for our drink orders, and took a while getting them to us as well. So much time in fact that we had time to look over the menu and chose what we wanted by the time she returned. We had to ask for water, and she brought only one glsss for the two of us! Huh??? The food made up for the service though. Awesome burgers, and the lamb was perfect and delicious! It was worth the groupon for sure!

Food is just okay! The elderly African American who served us was the highlight of the dining experience. I ordered the soup and sandwich for lunch and grilled chicken BLT was good but you can't really mess up grilled chicken, bacon, lettuce or tomatoes. The soup was she crab and was horrible. It tasted like canned clam chowder and I HATE clam chowder. Didn't see or taste any crab, but if it was it was crab with a "K" and I don't roll that way. When i told the waitress the soups was GROSS, you would have thought i told her she had a dog face! *blank stare* I then ordered the tomato soup which tasted like jarred spaghetti sauce with store bought croutons topped with Gouda cheese. I was utterly disappointed. Will not be going back.

Quite possibly my favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach! I haven't had anything bad here, and we've been here a few times. I had the salmon last night, and it was outstanding. I love it that they try to buy local food when possible, and they search for wild fish, hormone free meats, etc. Every Tuesday night is half price burger night, and every Wednesday is half price bottles of wine! I'm a huge fan!

We came here on Valentine's Day and had reservations for 6:30 pm. We arrived on time and we were promptly seated at our table. The table was....odd, to say the least. It was pushed up against the wall (which was slightly curved) so it didn't offer much room for comfortable seating. We had to slide the table away from the wall a little bit just to be able to sit comfortably. Then, our very friendly waitress came and greeted us and told us the specials for the evening. We had already known about the Beef Wellington on special (that's why we wanted to come here) and as soon as we mentioned that she didn't continue on with the specials. But it would have been nice to know in case something else peaked our attention. Plus, while her perfume smelled nice - it was a little heavy (nose hair burning when I caught a whiff as she swung away). We started with an app - calamari - and I wasn't really impressed. There was nothing special about it and I could get the same thing at Olive Garden (and it would have tasted better). So as I'm waiting for our entrees to arrive I take a look around and notice there are a bunch of OLD people here! I was started thinking "did I miss the sign about senior discounts tonight?!?" I was looking for some younger couples, a cool hip crowd...but not here. I didn't know what to think about that so I just focused on other things. Like the table down from us cooking their Kobe beef on the tabletop hot stone, which is cool until they leave something on the hot stone too long and this horrid burnt smell fills the air. Do they not notice that smell?? It's right in front of them!! It was so bad! Thankfully their waitress mentioned something to them and they were finished so she could take the hot stone away. So we both ordered the Beef Wellington for our entree and when it arrived I was slightly confused. I've never had it before and my idea of it comes from Gordon Ramsey and his show Hell's Kitchen. And that's just presentation alone, obviously. And while it looked pretty - I could already tell there was too much puff pastry wrapped around this filet. Once I cut into mine I could tell it was cooked to the right temperature but I couldn't really tell if there was any pate or whatever else is in it. But I mean, it tasted okay. Then I started examining the puff pasty and it was undercooked an raw around the edges. Eek. The side of mashed potatoes also wasn't anything to write home about, but then again it's mashed potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the parmesan risotto on the side and let me just say...if you ever go here order the risotto. This is the only thing from the night worth giving credit to, it was delicious. It made me wish I had ordered the shrimp and scallop risotto instead of the Beef Wellington, but I didn't. I guess if I ever decide to shell out the money for this place again, that's what I would order. I just have a hard time liking much about the experience because the food wasn't worth the $120 tab for two.

I went to this restaurant for a meeting. It is tucked away in Hilltop North. The outside is deceiving from what it looks like on the inside. The inside is super nice, chic, and modern. The bar and the seating area are in the front of the restaurant and the dining room is in the back through a doorway. It makes your dining experience seem intimate and not rushed The food was typical American food. They had hamburgers, calamari, shrimp, ribs, and steak. I tried the classic hamburger, which was ok. It was a little dry and there was not that many fries. The service was great! They are prompt and know how to handle large groups! This restaurant is a good place to chill and come after work. I would recommend it if you are near the hilltop area.

If you're new to V.B. or a local, you must try Cobalt Grille for a great dining experience. On this most recent visit, my wife enjoyed the Faroe Island Wild Salmon Filet , while I dined on the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast. Both were excellent choices. The wine list is extensive with plenty of selections "by the glass" - if you prefer not buying a whole bottle. Yes the tables are close together, but you can ask for a booth or even better pay closer attention to your partner at the table and disregard everyone else. The service was absolutely flawless. Dessert was the five doughnut holes with chocolate, caramel and strawberry toppings and decaf coffee ... a perfect ending. Cobalt Grille is one of my favorite V.B. restaurants located in the Hilltop Shopping Center. If you try it, you'll be a fan too.

My husband and I visited while on vacation. The 32 beach shuttle bus will take you to the shopping plaza where the restaurant is located. I made reservations, as per the groupon, but we arrived an hour before our reservation and were still welcomed and seated immediately. We sat in the dining room which had low lighting and chic decor. I agree with the other reviews that the tables are a bit too close to one another. Diners also have the option of being seated in the bar area or in the front patio area where you can enjoy a cigar (there is a cigar shoppe across the street). As I sat waiting for my food, I took notice of all of the food coming out of the window and EVERYTHING looked delicious...I glanced around the full dining room and everyone seemed quite happy with their meals. We ordered the fried green tomatoes appetizer, which was a tasty start to our meal...3 large slices coated in tempura batter, a side of spring greens, and a spicy ranch dipping sauce. For dinner, my husband had an 8oz filet layered with shrimp scampi in red wine sauce. The steak was cooked perfectly and the shrimp paired well with sauce. I ordered the halibut, which was served with sliced Roma tomatoes and spinach topped with cheese. I swapped my mashed potatoes for his Parmesan risotto because I prefer rice with fish. One note, they are heavy handed with the cheese, but no complaints here. Food presentation was appealing, and everything tasted fresh. This is one of those restaurants where you hope everyone at your table orders something different so that you can sample it all! There was no issue with using the groupon (it doesn't work on 1/2 price burgers or wine, which didn't apply to our meal). Service was top notch. The manager and chef were highly visible, and the severs were attentive to all tables, not just the ones in their assigned sections. The restaurant appeared to have a good mix of locals and tourists. My husband and I would highly recommend this place which was a welcome break from the tourist traps near our hotel, Lovely romantic dinner - thank you!

This place is a great find! Really nice atmosphere, when you walk in it feels like you are in a jazz bar, and when you walk to the back it seems like a 5 star restaurant. The food is great as well. I had one of their burgers and my wife had a crab pasta. Both dishes were presented well and tasted great. The price was very reasonable for the taste of the food. I have paid way more for far less quality. I highly recommend this place!

My huband said "Get in the car, close your eyes, I'm taking you somewhere special because you're my special lady". I was 20 months pregnant at the time and needed some cheering up. How else do you cheer up a uber pregnant lady besides feeding her good food? Feeding her really good food. The atmosphere was intimate and inviting. Our waitress was very nice and friendly without being intrusive. The calamari and caprese salad was good although a bit generic and forgettable. I had the beef wellington which was very good. But, my husband had a steak that was perfect. I spent the rest of the night secretly wishing I had gotten that instead. For dessert I had my favorite: creme brulee. Pretty hard to mess up.

Delectable food with sharp presentation. Wonderfully unique Ginger Pear mojito was refreshing, but the aftertaste was a bit like perfumed soap. I had an excellent steak and garlic mashed potato dinner. The food is superb, the wait staff is great and friendly, and the decor is dim but ultra-chic.

My boyfriend and I decided to go here on our last night in VA Beach as our splurge night. It was a great choice. I had found a groupon online and we used that ($40 gift certificate for $20). We ordered mostly from the special menu that night, so I can't say much about specific entrees. I can say this, they know what they're doing! We had an appetizer of fried green tomatoes with chipotle ranch, very delicious! I had a rockfish special, it came with mashed potatoes, asparagus, a delicious sauce, and covered with crab and lobster. The whole thing was $27, which isn't bad, it was a good size too! The rockfish was cooked perfectly, moist and flakey. My boyfriend had a filet napolean,I think that was the name. It was AWESOME! He ordered it Medium Rare and it was cooked perfectly. He had three pieces of thinner steak layered with sauteed mushrooms and shrimp with a side of parmesan risotto. All was very delicious and covered in a balsamic reduction. This was about $29. To finish the night I had a cinnamon pear martini, there was dry ice in the bottom so it was bubbly and smokey, very cool. We also had a chocolate lava cake, with ice cream and berries. I believe it was homemade because when we ordered the dessert the waitress told us that those were taking about 15 min that night. Definitely worth it! Our waitress was also great! Very knowledgable and attentive. Overall, amazing experience. I believe our bill was around $110, but with the groupon around $70! I will definitely be going here next time I'm in town!

Best burgers in Virginia Beach! Don't get me wrong, this place is more than just burgers but oh my gosh, their burgers are amazing! The beef is great in quality and taste. Not like the grey burger meat you get at other places that tastes like it was freezer burnt. Their beef is great. The burger choices are vast. Too many to list, and on Tuesday nights they have $6 burgers with additional burger specials offered too. The fries are a good size and cooked to perfection. The burger is served on a mini Boos block and paired with a pickle! As always, the service is great. On Tuesday nights it's definitely busy and perfect for the whole family...or a date night! Oh, and you gotta try one of their deep fried Oreos!

Well I read another review that said it was KID FRIENDLY - WRONG and WRONG! We were looked at like we had horns growing from our heads and the nerve to bring our children here. The food was OK, not the best I have eaten (Go to nearby 757 Fire and Vine - yummy). We recieved sub standard service because we had children with us. We spent well over $100 and I will never go back to this place, with OR without children. The very expensive starter salad with roasted vinagrette was sub par. My steak was cooked well and the risotto was decent - but the whole experience left me lacking.

Ok just ok. We got there at 5 for a drink and an appetizer. Menu was ok. The tilapia appi was very good. The service wasn't. The staff (6 of them and 6 of us) seemed more interested in each other and their phones than us. Disappointing. And I have this thing about a restaurant or bar that doesn't have beer on tap. A definite non-starter for me - they don't -- only bottles. If it was the only place open I'd go again but really wouldn't seek it out.

The place may be average to others, but if you know Chef Alvin and he prepares a meal for you, it is 5 star! Few restaurants have beef wellington on the menu today (and even if they did, could not do it right). Cobalt does not have it on menu, but if you special request in advance, british-trained Chef Alvin will prepare one as heavenly as you ever have tasted! Start it all with some fresh York River oysters, followed by a burrata salad and you would have a meal to die for! His chocolate souffle is the grande finale! Here's to you Alvin! Look forward to visiting again!

I've been wanting to check out Cobalt Grille for awhile. A friend and I came in on a Saturday evening and sat at the bar (the dining room looked a little froo froo). They do have food and drink specials at the bar everyday (including wknds) until 7pm. We ordered the mussels as an app, which was fine, but there were a lot of broken pieces of shells throughout the dish which made it difficult to eat. For my entree, I ordered the brie burger and truffle fries. These items were both delicious but notice my focus isn't really on the food at this point? From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, we got very unfriendly vibes from the bartender. It was an older female (late 30s) with blonde hair and all night we just found her to be fake, not hospitable, or friendly whatsoever. I even looked right at her and asked her to box up my condiments with my dinner and she brought it back without them. All night she was cutting her eyes, being short with us, and simply just rude. What the hell was her problem? This is a perfect example of how bad service can alter your dining experience. I'm going to consider this a fluke though because the place was cute and the food was great and next time consider eating in the dining room to avoid this witch.

Tonight my husband had a working dinner. So instead of cooking I had decided to take my daughter out for dinner. It has been all most a year seance the last time we were here. We both started off our dinner off with tomato basil soup. Very nice! It was thick and hardy. Then I ordered a the special which was beef Wellington it was superb. My slaughter ordered the risotto with sea scallopers and shrimp. For a kid of 10, she cleaned her plate. Good job chefs!!

My peeps in the asian gangsta coalition of wannabe foodies warned me about this place with one utterance: meh. Still wanting to give it a chance, friend and I went and ordered various apps so that we could experience some variety. Plus, we weren't that super hungry. Maybe that's why walked away with the same lackadaisical "meh" after our meal. So here's the breakdown - wedge salad with house made buttermilk ranch with gorgonzola - Server was hyping this up because of its house-made-ness. anything with the words "buttermilk" and "ranch" in the title should be full of rich, bold flavors of salty goodness. Not normally a fan of gorgonzola, I flung those globules of grossness aside for my dinner companion to enjoy. Even still, the dressing did not live up to the server's exclamations of joy and lacked a defining smack of sodium. -kobe style beef carpaccio - the special of the night. Listed as "kobe", I specifically asked if the dish was kobe or kobe-style. Server sheepishly replied, kobe-style. Okay, sure. Accompanied with a japanese hot stone for those not into ingesting unheated protein. I'm thinking my reaction to this plate is more of a reaction to carpaccio in general rather than Cobalt's version, but I REALLY REALLY want to like carpaccio, given that I do love my steaks mooing and my sushi practically swimming. Maybe it's just the fact that this dish is hyped merely because of the presentation and process rather than the taste, but carpaccio ANYWHERE has never been more than blah for me. So I won't fault Cobalt for this. But it's just one more justification for ANY kind of ceviche over carpaccio in my book. - calamari - Full disclosure - I hate squid. I really do. My gangsta coalition is slowly trying to nurse me into liking it for their sakes so that we could all enjoy an app together. And while I still can do minor, extremely teeny, microscopic bits of fried tentacle BURIED in marinara sauce, Cobalt's version is not the case. This calamari used pretty large chunks of the molluskul body and slapped on the dough like they were krispy kreming that sucker. It was enough to drown out the squid flavor [thank god] but was too much to actually be crispy and well.... fried-tasting. What you have instead is a damp, doughy cephalopod. Nasty. and yes, I ate more than one. Dear god, I hate squid. - turkey lettuce wraps - were just okay. not as poultry tasting as another reviewer noted but still pretty bland. was looking forward to this as I'm sure everyone is aware of the chicken lettuce wraps from a certain national chain which I will never publicly admit to patronizing. What really struck me was the remarkable lack of flavor. It was food, it was filling, it was empty calories. But did it leave a memory? meh. Service was pretty attentive and enthusiastic. The vibe and decor was eclectic and cool. If only the food could rise above meh to match everything else, it would've been a more fulfilling experience.

From walking in I got a strange vibe of this place. It looked like a republican convention or like the old folks home made a pit stop on the way back to the community. The service was so-so and I say this based on the fact that my table of 4 received 3 different glasses of wine and 4 small tastes of various wines (all bad suggestions for a sweet wine) before I got my one soda. The calamari was ok (even with sweet chili sauce for dipping) and the fried green tomatoes were more of a heavy tempura batter than a light cornmeal. For dinner I had the crab cakes with a side of risotto. Crab cakes were more filler than I like; I prefer the jumbo lump crab cakes from Croc's and Freemason Abbey. The mashed potatoes tasted bland and straight from the box but the asparagus were thick and well prepared. The side of risotto was nothing to brag about. There were hints of undercooked rice (possibly stale but still not al dente) and it was heavy. From what I heard the duck was awesome and from what I tasted the scallops were fresh and mushroom risotto was creamy. The dip sum donuts seemed like a high school culinary class attempt at Bardo's donuts. They weren't bad, I'm just saying there are better out there. We usually saw our waitress around fifteen minutes after we already needed her but still tipped her like she did a good job. I'm sure she expected we would leave 10% or less and I hope she's learned to break the stereotype. All-in-all I can't say I'm against going back; I'm saying if I do, it'll probably involve someone else paying or a groupon of sorts.

My new favorite restaurant! Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and wonderful food! I went to a wine paring dinner and they had a dish with scallions that I wanted to pick up and lick the bowl afterwards. I don't even like sea food! The secret is in the sauce! Bon appetite!

Cobalt Grille has a very contemporary look. Located in the Hilltop Shopping Center. Fairly small restaurant, separated by a small, cool looking bar with a few couches and comfortable setting, with fireplace. Very cozy. Restaurant area has an urban look, with exposed bricks and glass. Low lighting makes for a great date night setting. Food was average. We ordered a Cobb salad, which had a very strong onion taste to it. Ranch dressing was pretty skimpy, making for a dry salad. Too much cheese for a Cobb. Heavy on the Pistachios. We ordered the surf and turf dinner, which consisted of flank steak with a wine-based sauce. Crab cake, which was lightly breaded, very crunchy, and was filled with onion and pepper. My crab cake loving g/f, thought it was very good. Lots of crab meat, light on the breading. The meal came with steamed asparagus and mac & cheese (mild white cheese). We shared our meal ($26.00). Our drinks included a nice merlot and a coffee and Bailey's. The Bailey's was served on the side. Generous shot, but I was told that was the end of their Bailey's and if I wanted more, I'd have to settle for their "generic" Bailey's. I can't believe a well-stocked bar would run out of Bailey's Irish Cream. I consider that a staple for all bars. The server was attentive, but the bus boy came by and swept up our half-finished salad, without asking, even though we had just told the waiter that we were still working on it. He was gone before we could even tell him "Hey, we're still eating that!". I guess he missed that in his training. I like the atmosphere and the presentation of the meal, but the food was "meh". We may give it one more shot sometime in the future. For side salad, one entree, a glass of wine and a shot of Bailey's & Coffee, the total bill came to $52.00 without tax and tip.

A fantastic experience all round. Beautiful salmon perfectly cooked and fresh tender vegetables. First class service- a wonderful evening to celebrate my husband's birthday. I am also very impressed with the wine list. Some very affordable lovely wines to choose from. I almost forgot! The cocktail waitress made me the most delightful cocktail called Flower box with St Germaine. Heavenly!

all I can say is GO FOR THE BURGER! I actually haven't had anything else from there but I know it's good because others have said..but man oh man, the burger is one of the best I have had, if not the best I have had..pair that with the fresh hand cut fries..delish!

Group-on visit. Went after 7 pm without a reservation. Had to wait 20. Hostess was nice, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. When seated, service was friendly and quick. Wine prices seemed competive, comprehensive list. We loved the goat cheese appetizer, enough cheese, dried tomatoes, olives and roasted garlic. Delicious. Pork ribeye was dry, asked for it at chef's recommended doneness. Crispy salmon was nicely presented, crispy skin. Sauce tasted of salmon fat ( grey stuff I scrape off under skin) and none of the tastes integrated. Veggies, olives and capers didn't pop, more bland fiber. Salmon was good, mine was underdone. I'm not experienced ordering so think this was partially my error. Parm risotto was good, but missing the hedonistic finish. No desert. Good jazz band. Recommend this place for Tue Burger night, they seemed immense.

I visited the Cobalt Grille last week while visiting some relatives in Virginia Beach and I found a pretty good restaurant. I've gone to many restaurants in the Virginia Beach area and the decor in this place is pretty nice. It's made for the business casuals so you don't have to feel too underdressed when inside. They have an assortment of drinks, which is good. I had a margarita and it tasted pretty good. My whole party decided to get appetizers. I tried their Kobe Beef strips and it was AWESOME. It comes with cheese and a raw pieces of Kobe. They give you a small stone pallet that has fire lit underneath. It's fun to be able to cook your own Kobe. They taste great raw as well. I highly recommend this appetizer. On to the main course. I asked what their special of the day was and they mentioned a filet mignon. I'm an avid eater of filet mignon, especially since I like how soft the meat is. I tried theirs and was a little bit disappointed by it. The meat wasn't as soft as I wanted it to be and the spices weren't that well put together. I don't think they prepared it well. The meal was accompanied by some great mashed potatoes though. It had a nice texture and "potatoe" taste to it. It was one of the best mashed potatoes that I've ever had. For dessert I had the donut holes and fried ice cream. These were delightfully wonderful. It had some chocolate that you can dip the donut holes in. The fried ice cream goes perfect. This is one of my favorite desserts ever. Overall, the experience was nice. I give it a 3 star because I wasn't too thrilled with my main course. The shrimp and scallops looked tasty though. I will definitely give it another try when I make it back to Virginia Beach.

The atmosphere is great. When we went, they had live music although the songs were quite depressing, i.e., people by Beatles. I would have preferred something a little more upbeat. Nevertheless, the food was good. My husband had the shrimp and scallops risotto and it was cooked well. I ordered the grilled ribeye steak and although the steak was cooked perfectly, the arugula and pecorino salad was extremely salty. As far as the drink menu, you may want to stick to wine. I ordered a mojito and it was awful!

  • Harris F.

This place was underwhelming. I had duck which was cooked well but was prepared in a balsamic sauce that was too sweet and pretty much flavorless. Other reviews boast about large portions, but I actually left feeling hungry. My date had steak which had quite a bit of gristle, though it too was cooked as requested. I'm happy to pay $20 plus for a good meal if I leave feeling satisfied, but that really just how I felt about this place! Perhaps they were just having an off night, but with those prices, I'm not willing to chance it again.

I would not recommend this place. The service was terrible, barely received any attention from our server. She didn't tell us the specials. The wait was 30 mins for our food. And for the price, the food was mediocre. I had high expectations but to say the least, they were not met. I would not go back.

One of the best meals I've had here in Va Beach. Great atmosphere and wine prices were reasonable. I had the special which was florentine stuffed salmon which was unreal. The wife had the shrimp and scallops risotto which was also hands down delicious. Will def be coming back again for great food and service.

I was a regular here in 2002 through 2004, and it was great to be back. Food, flavor and friendly staff all remain well above the norm. Cobalt Grille is still a real winner. As one of my guests noted, he had fantastic steak, prepared as he wanted it, a hot dessert, and more then a few beverages and he still paid less then a he had the night before for bad freid seafood. Go here any chance you get, just be sure to find it tucked away at the back right side of the shopping center.

We went here with a Groupon and along with some reasonable expectations from friends we ended really enjoying our meal. The scallop and shrimp risotto was delicious and the scallops were some of the best I've ever had. My husband got the filet mignon and was cooked perfectly and delicious. The atmosophere was trendy and welcoming and the staff was friendly. My only complaint is that it took a bit longer then I would have liked to get our food but they were very busy so I can give them some leeway for that. We got in and out in about 90 minutes which isnt too bad. The prices are also a bit steep (about $5 over then I would have expected). I would definitely go back and try another dish.

I was pretty disappointed with Cobalt Grill after having dinner there on Saturday night. I had one of the specials - Line Caught Rockfish topped with Lump Crab and Lobster. The fish was definitely fresh, but overcooked and totally dried out. The lump crab/lobster topping was sad, dry and not very good. It was a few small chunks of lobster claw meat and some stringy crab that had been overcooked. Disappointing overall. The desserts however, were pretty good. Funnel Cake Deep Fried Double Stuffed Oreos and Donut Holes. Sadly, they weren't good enough to make me want to go back.

The stylish Cobalt Grille always delivers a solid performance. The food is reliably delicious; the presentation is beautiful, and the service is above-average. Cobalt's wine list is respectable, with some affordable fan favorites but also a few more intriguing selections. Go and dine, be happy.

I went here for dinner, but didn't order an entree, so I can't comment on that part. I had the chopped salad and tuna sashimi starter. Loved the tuna sashimi! Done perfectly and I would definitely get it again. The salad was yummy, but nothing special. It was a large portion, for sure. Our server was nice and attentive and didn't mind that our large group lingered for awhile. I will go back again and try an entree.

My wife and I sat outside and ordered a couple of appetizers - the mussels and fired green tomatoes. The mussels were to die for - they came with 8 toasted baguettes and we simply had to get more to 'sop' up the sauce that the mussels were served/cooked in. The mussels were good too though. My wife liked the FGTs but I was not a big fan - nothing to write home about. The service was above average but the food was super good.

My wife and checked out Cobalt for the first time last Friday. I really wanted to like this place based on reviews I read and what I saw on the web site, but unfortunately we were both disappointed. The atmosphere is nice and classy and the food presentation is awesome, but the taste leaves one wanting. My wife had the crab cakes and I had the chicken penne pasta. She wasn't impressed with her crab cakes. I thought they tasted OK - not bad, but I wouldn't recommend them to somone else, though. The chicken penne pasta was just OK. I wound up adding salt to make it more palatable, otherwise, it was kind of bland. I saw some other meals come out that looked really good. The burgers looked very good and if I ever return that's probably what I will order. I'd just hate to go some place like this for a burger and fries.

My husband and I are vacationing in Virginia Beach. Prior to vacationing, I signed up for Hampton Roads Groupons and Living Social Deals. Cobalt Grille offered a groupon, so I snatched it up. We checked into our hotel on Saturday around 5, got settled in, and decided to eat out. Cobalt Grille was pretty hopping, especially since it was a Saturday night. They were able to squeeze us in, but I would recommend making reservations if you ever decide to go. The very front of the restaurant outside has outside seating and a fire ring that you can sit around. Very cozy! When you walk in, there is a bar with an acoustic singer/guitarist. Then you move to the dining room. The dining room is crowded and loud, but it's also cozy and nicely decorated. It feels very trendy. The service was quick and friendly. The menu has a lot of variety and is perfect for a foodie! My husband ordered the Shrimp and Scallops over pasta for $23.95. There was a lot of shrimp and scallops. They were perfectly cooked and had great flavor! I almost ordered the duck, but instead, I ordered one of the nightly specials they had which was an 8 oz Filet Mignon with lump crab meat and Bearnaise sauce for $29.95. The Filet also came with white truffle mac n cheese and broccoli. I subbed out the broccoli for asparagus. Everything was cooked to perfection! Cobalt Grille notes at the bottom of their menu that they serve natural, organic, and locally grown food whenever possible. That's a big positive for us! We left dinner very fat and happy. I would 120% recommend this restaurant to anyone!

I enjoyed my dinner here. I forget if I went for Restaurant Week or with a Restaurant certificate or both. Often time with such promotion, the service gets reduced. This was not the case here. The space was not crowded and we were serviced in a timely manner. The food was not spared either. Would definitely go back and try it again.

Great food! We always look forward to dinner at Cobalt. They always have wonderful dinner specials. The wait staff are friendly and make great recommendations. They are doing something right to be in business for as long as they have been....

I wanted so much to be impressed, but I really let down. I have avoided going here because the signage was pretty tacky, but we ran out of choices and went. The interior decor was just as tacky as the outside. It was like eating at an MC Hammer video set. My Caesar salad was poorly executed, the dressing was overpowering and very heavy, and the croutons tasted like...well, kinda dusty, like mold. $7. My wife had the grilled chicken penne in a cream sauce. The pasta was over cooked. The sauce was over flavored...too salty, too much bacon, the chicken was overcooked. $19. I had the rockfish with crab and lobster served with whipped potatoes. The rockfish was way, way overcooked. The sauce was salty enough to pickle something in. I was forced to eat a little bit of potatoes with each bite because the rest of the dish was too salty to eat alone. The potatoes tasted like boxed middle school cafeteria spuds. $26. The server was very nice and that is the only reason I gave the second star. I am bummed that I wasted my money. I suggest you try Burtons, Fire and Vine, or maybe McDonalds. Bummer.

I eat here every week and find the staff, food and Alvin Williams , the Chef, excellent and the restaurant one of the best eating establishments anywhere, and I've eaten in many major cities of the world.

Very nice place..very trendy. I really like the atmosphere. The menu is not too large, but everything sounded yummy. I had the chicken stuffed with crab meat - very good. The service was OK, but our waiter forgot a glass of wine and a coupon we had. Would definitely come back!
